London never had the kitchen stove of Ella Fitzgerald or Sarah Vaughan, simply often secondhand restraint, softness, and subtlety to maximum vantage. An actress as considerably as a singer, London played with heavyweights wish Gregory Peck and Rock Hudson in various films, and was married to Jack Webb of Dragnet celebrity for seven-spot years ahead marrying songwriter Bobby Troup ("Route 66"). London performed her biggest hit, "Cry Me a River," in the Jayne Mansfield cinema The Girl Can't Help It. After recording her last album, Yummy, Yummy, Yummy, in 1969, she continued to pretend -- playacting a suckle on the NBC medical drama Hand brake from 1974-1978. Despite her "sexual practice symbol" pic -- London was known for her sexy LP covers, which score them collector's items -- she was surprisingly shy, and left show game on the whole in the late '70s. In the mid-'90s London suffered a stroking, which light-emitting diode to a half-decade of poor health and at long last contributed to her goal on October 18, 2000.

Glasto 2008 was a very hard sell

'Mongol' has impressive bow

Specialty film is one Picturehouse's remaining releases

It looks like Bob Berney could go out with a bang.


Limited openings during the weekend included an auspicious bow by the period adventure film "The Mongol" from Berney's Picturehouse, a specialty unit Warner Bros. recently tagged for shutdown.


Directed by Sergei Bodrov ("Nomad: The Warrior"), the subtitled "Mongol" grossed $133,136 from five venues for a weekend-topping theater average of $26,627. The Ghengis Khan drama, which was screened to a good reception at ShoWest in March, is one of a handful of final releases from Picturehouse.


"Like the critics have said, ('Mongol') has real action, thousands of actors and limited CGI, and that makes it stand out," Berney said.


The "better than good" bow for "Mongol" means the film will broaden to 400 or more runs within two weeks and perhaps ramp up further thereafter, he estimated.


Berney said he has been talking to prospective financing sources about starting a new film distribution company.


"Literally just walking down the street in Cannes, everybody was like, yeah, let's do it," the independent film veteran said. "It's too early to tell, but the main thing was that I felt a lot of support."


Other remaining Picturehouse releases include "American Girl" (June 20) and "The Women" (Sept. 12).


Also during the weekend, Third Rail unspooled the Weinstein Co. comedy "The Promotion" in six locations and grossed $28,859. That was good for a sturdy $4,810 per site ahead of future expansions.


Sony Pictures Classics debuted the family drama "When Did You Last See Your Father?" with eight playdates and grossed $41,082, or a solid $5,135 per engagement.


Elsewhere in the specialty market, SPC's war drama "The Children of Huang Shi" added 13 locations for a total of 30 and grossed $71,652. That was a tepid $2,388 per site, with its cume reaching $201,650 through three sessions.


Paramount Vantage -- another specialty unit recently marked for shuttering -- expanded its martial arts comedy "The Foot Fist Way" by 14 theaters for a total of 18 and grossed $49,508, or a so-so $2,750 per venue. Its cume hit $85,288.


IFC Films' 1970s crime drama "Savage Grace" added five theaters to total seven and grossed $23,838, or an acceptable $3,405 per venue, with a cume of $56,638.


Miramax's drama "Reprise" added one playdate for a total of 15 and grossed $47,575, or $3,172 per engagement, with a cume of $321,953.

Keys Upset And `disappointed' By Blender Article Quotes

LATEST: ALICIA KEYS has taken to the airwaves to "clarify statements" she made about gangsta rap in men's magazine Blender.
In the new article, the R+B star sensationally claims gangsta rap was "a ploy to convince black people to kill each other... by the government."
But, after reading the piece in the new issue of Blender, Keys insists her comments were "misinterpreted" and she's "disappointed" with the "madness" surrounding the article.
Speaking on Los Angeles DJ Ryan Seacrest's radio show on Tuesday morning (15Apr08), Keys explained, "I feel that I wasn't a hundred per cent clear on what I was saying and so, because of that, it got slightly misinterpreted, and somehow it got misinterpreted that I was saying that the government was creating gangsta rap - and that's not what I was saying.

"What I was saying was that the term gangsta rap was so over sloganised during that time... That's what I was trying to talk about.

"In so many ways, everyday people, as well as the government, could have really done so much more to sorta (sic) obliterate and eradicate the things that were going on in the communities at that time that forced the artists to discuss and talk about, so strongly, what they saw, what they lived with.

"I wasn't saying that I'm a conspiracy theorist, and I wasn't saying that I'm anti-anyone because anybody who knows my character knows that I'm a very positive person... My only aim is to uplift people and spread love.
"You're in an interview for half and hour, 45 minutes... and you're talking about these different thoughts and ideas and I think... there's a way that I didn't exactly clarify what I meant to the point where he (the journalist) could misinterpret it.
"I don't regret doing this interview; overall it was a great article. It was merely a line or two that has provoked all of this madness. I regret that a negative spin has been put (on it)."

Cowell's pop idol to play Glastonbury

We knew there was something missing from the Glastonbury lineup this year, we just failed to realise that it was X Factor, Pop Idol and Britain's Got Talent's Simon Cowell we were hankering after. According to the Star, Cowell has "revealed his own secret pop idol" in Shakin' Stevens, who will perform at the festival this June. Cowell's such a huge fan, he bought himself a pair of tickets for Pilton.

In the News is glad to hear that money has changed hands. He might be one of the most powerful men in the music industry, and therefore likely to be able to get his hands on some VIP tickets for nothing, but how are the friends and relatives of Guardian staff going to get in if Cowell takes all the freebies?

"The news will amaze modern music fans," continues the Star, "who write off Shaky as uncool. But it was no surprise to the rocker himself - real name Michael Barratt." Surely the point is that those who write off "real name Michael Barratt" are also unlikely to believe that Cowell sets the bar for hipness? In case you were wondering, In the News thinks that they're both really, really cool.

Celine Dion has between 2,000-3,000 pairs of shoes. It's true, the Sun quotes her as saying as much. "My hobbies are shopping and golfing," she says. "I own between two and three thousand pairs of shoes."

Imagine being so rich and up to your eyes in shoes that there's a discrepancy of up to 1000 in your estimation of how many pairs you actually own. Celine appears to be the Imelda Marcos of the Noughties. Though she has not yet revealed plans to rule over the Philippines.

The Star is reporting that "whacked-out Amy" is set to hit the catwalks this spring, as a model for British designer Julien Macdonald. They may call her a "druggie pop wreck" and "Mrs Mopp" but Macdonald has other ideas: "She's an amazing talent, isn't she? She's unique." That she is.

The Star isn't happy about this, and not simply because the paper disapproves of Winehouse's current fashion of "tutu skirts", which, frankly, we've never seen her wear. The problem lies in the fact that by tottering down the catwalk, Winehouse automatically becomes a figure of aspiration in the highly suggestible minds of young women.

"Some fashionistas fear the decision means fans will try to copy her trashy togs in a bid to appear hip." Never mind the skeletal figure and chronic drug use, think about the effect Winehouse could have on fashion! Oh, the horror.
